Hi, I work with member of Congress X. I was hoping you could meet up at #NN11A common mistake I see people make when reaching out to bloggers is to introduce themselves by way of asking the blogger to post about something, or waiting until it’s “convenient” instead of working to build a relationship from the outset. Well-meaning organizers often ruin potential alliances by not reaching out proactively to bloggers and blog communities. Start relationships before you need something, so that you can work productively with bloggers when it’s crunch time.

Here are some basic tips for building relationships with bloggers:

  • Reach out proactively. Send an email introducing yourself and your role within the organization.
  • Check in. Send occasional emails or Tweets that show you’re paying attention. Comment on a post you like, or just ask how things are going.
  • Solicit feedback and advice. Ask the bloggers how your organization is doing and what you can do to improve. They’ll appreciate being asked and you’ll get an honest assessment of your work.
  • Collaborate. Approach this as a working relationship. Instead of pitching stories, talk about ways you can work together for your common goal.

A couple of weeks ago I was doing a talk on blogger outreach for our New Media Fundamentals Training and one of our attendees observed that blog outreach sounded just like traditional media outreach to her. I agree. Good outreach is good outreach, no matter if you’re talking to bloggers, reporters, volunteers, or community leaders. The goal is to build strong relationships.

Explains some of the major problems

May 3, 2013
by Dr. Richard Swier

The Heritage Foundation reports, “Senators return to Washington next week to debate the Gang of Eight’s comprehensive immigration bill. Heritage President Jim DeMint has said the bill is ‘unfair, it costs too much, and it’s going to make the problem worse’.”

The below video is testimony before the US Senate by the ICE Union Chief, Chris Crane, in his testimony on the 884 page new Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act (S. 744). The ICE Union won an initial court victory in its lawsuit against the Obama Administration. Federal Judge Federal Judge Reed O’Connor told the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that they had no power to refuse to deport illegal aliens.

Crane testifies before the Senate expressing his concern that law enforcement was shut out of the negotiations on the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act.

Crane testified the Act is flawed as currently written because it:

(1) does not provide for tamper proof Federal ID cards to keep track of illegal aliens

(2) does not have any provision to arrest and remove 400,000 criminal Illegal Aliens who are fugitives from justice with felony warrants

(3) does not deal with the inability of the federal government’s bureaucracy to process 18+ million Illegal aliens when the federal government hasn’t even been able to process 900,000 Veterans disability claims over a 4 year period

(4) does nothing to make Universities report (which should be under threat of felony criminal charges) the names and locations of the hundreds of thousands foreign students like the terrorists who were involved in the Boston bombing who no longer attend college classes

(5) does nothing to provide a means to cover the $6 trillion cost of the flawed 884 page Act according to research by the Heritage Foundation (the Senate Bill intentionally misled the American people by saying it would cost $22.5 billion)

(6) doesn’t cover the cost because the Senate bill provides for charging each of the 18+ million illegal aliens $500.00 when the real cost per illegal is $335,000.00

(7) intentionally misleads the American people by saying the Act would not be enacted until the border was secured when there is no provision to guarantee the border is secure after 29 years of failed promise (THE ONLY ORGANIZATION THAT CAN BE TRUSTED TO VERIFY THE BORDER HAS BEEN CLOSED IS THE ICE UNION)

(8) flagrantly discriminates against nearly 4 million unemployed Veterans by giving employers a $3000 tax credit for employing illegal aliens and relieves them from having to cover illegal aliens under the Obama Health Care law without giving those same benefits to unemployed US citizens

(9) does absolutely nothing to locate the many terrorists in the US among the 18+ million illegal aliens like the Chechen terrorists, the Times Square bomber, the first World Trade Union bombers in 1993, and Major Hassan who had all been affected by the Islam jihadists outreach program underway in the US by remaining under the radar scope of CIA and the FBI’s Watch Lists (the requirement in the Act for a tamper proof Federal ID card requiring fingerprints would help locate those terrorist suspects)

(10) does not provide provisions to prevent 80 million unskilled relatives of the 18+ million illegal aliens form coming into the US which would destroy the fragile US Welfare system & bankrupt the Republic

(11) does not have a provision to deport anyone who fails in their application (Mohammed Salameh who applied for amnesty in 1984 but was turned down was a co-conspirator in the in the first World Trade Center attack in 1993)

(12) does not provide annual quotas to process applicants so the crush of applicants won’t bring the process to a full stop, and does not have provisions in it to do a thorough background investigation of applicant from high threat countries/regions.

Heritage put together an info-graphic that explains some of the major problems with a ‘comprehensive’ approach to immigration reform. Forward this to a friend to share these concerns.

Reid accedes to Rand Paul on immigration bill

One of the major criticisms of the “Gang of Eight” is that they’re attempting to rush the immigration bill through unamended, thus forcing the public to (paraphrasing Nancy Pelosi here) have to pass it to find out what’s in it.

On Tuesday, I demonstrated the falsity of that charge, noting that in response to concerns about maintaining the E-Verify program as it shifts from a participation-optional to participation-mandatory system, the bill has already been amended to explicitly mandate that E-Verify remain in operation during this interim — a concern originally flagged by TheDC’s-own Neil Munro.

Now, another example. You may recall that in the wake of the Boston bombings, Sen. Rand Paul — broadly a supporter of immigration reform as a concept, but one who remains on the fence with regard to this bill — sent a letter to Majority Leader Harry Reid, requesting a Homeland Security Committee hearing on immigration.

A source now tells me that, in fact, Republican members of the Gang of 8 wanted the hearing held and that this — combined with Paul’s insistence – resulted in Reid acceding to the request.

In a letter that went largely unnoticed, Reid responded to Paul’s letter, writing:

I appreciate the support you have shown for reforming our broken immigration system, including for a path to earned citizenship for the roughly 11 million immigrants here unlawfully today. Under the status quo, we do not know who is here and might be intending to do us harm.
This is one of the most important issues the Senate will work on this year. The Judiciary Committee has held several hearings on immigration this year, and continues to hold more. Other committees, including the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, are also holding hearings on the issue. There will be ample opportunity to amend this bill, both in committee and on the floor, as it moves through regular order.

According to the source, prior to the letter being sent to Paul, there had been no indication that the Homeland Security Committee would hold a hearing relevant to the immigration bill.

Harry Reid, of course, could potentially be misleading us. But, for the time being, it appears that Republicans — including Paul and Sen. Rubio — have won an important concession, this time in the realm of procedure.

That follows the win for pro-reform conservatives in getting the E-verify language clarified and, according to Sen. Jeff Flake (who represents a border state where immigration is a major issue), even making Democrats accept border security requirements in the first place.

Don’t look now, but de facto amnesty may be on its way out the door, courtesy of a vastly more conservative-friendly bill and process than immigration-reform opponents want you to believe.

Conservative Grassroots Protest Common Core State Education Standards

Conservative Grassroots Protest Common Core State Education Standards

Published: 7:59 AM May 02, 2013

The leaders of nearly thirty grass roots conservative groups are worried about the imposition of new common core state education standards.

Today, a letter is being hand-delivered to Governor Walker and Republican legislators in Madison in which the tea party leaders express their concerns.

It reads, in part:

“The federal and state governments will enforce CCSS. Yet, the National Governor’s Association (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) hold the copyright. Never mind the involvement of a long list of corporate partners listed on the CCSSO and NGA websites and traceable elsewhere. Via CCSS, people we did not elect can pursue private agendas vis à vis the education of Wisconsin children…with zero accountability to citizens.

“Local taxpayers like us will have to foot the yet untold bill for CCSS – including but not limited to major technology initiatives, additional administrative staff, training, and textbook compliance. Our children will be subjected to CCSS and will have to live with whatever outcomes it yields. But CCSS will be entirely out of our hands.”

The coalition consists of the leaders of grass roots organizations from across Wisconsin — from Peshtigo to Dodgeville and dozens of communities in between. It was formed online, and is not supported or funded by any national or state organization. The tea party leaders communicated via facebook and held a series of conference calls to refine their arguments and craft the letter.

The letter concludes with a call to action, and a points to a growing unease over the federal government’s influence over local, public education.

“CCSS is not limited government. It is not local control of education. It is not even state control of education, It does not represent a benchmarked or better standard for students. It will not encourage better teachers. It wrongly quells the voices of parents, citizens, and taxpayers. Moreover, CCSS is not fixable. Rather, it is a gross corruption of fiduciary duty and a violation of citizen’s rights on multiple levels. However much money and effort will be down the drain in backing away from CCSS, consider it cheap in comparison to what will result from continuing to embrace this monstrosity.

“The State of Wisconsin must not remain complicit in CCSS, and Republicans should not be caught on the wrong side of this issue. We trust you will act quickly to verify what we’ve shared and to protect the rights of all Wisconsinites, particularly our children. We will not rest until CCSS is repealed in this state. We are watching. We are not alone. Our numbers are growing.”

Americans have a common cause in battle against Common Core State Standards

Americans have a common cause in battle against Common Core State Standards

By Watchdog Staff / May 2, 2013 / No Comments

By Karen Schroeder | For Wisconsin Reporter

MADISON — The government is planning to spend about $16 BILLION to implement programs that are basically the same as those paid for in the 1950s. Many have been given the false impression that Common Core State Standards and theInternational Baccalaureate programs will reform and improve education. However, these two newest educational policies are an extension of old policies that weakened the American educational system and destroyed its international reputation for excellence.

Serious concerns about the decline of academic standards escalated in the 1970s.California Assemblyman Robert H. Burke noted that innovations in education required high school graduates to meet academic standards that were little more than those previously required to graduate from eighth grade, but much time had been spent “educating the whole child.” Those innovations and Bloom’s “Taxonomy of Educational Objectives were identified as the culprits undermining academic progress for our children.

Karen Schroeder, President of Advocates for Academic Freedom.

Karen Schroeder, president of Advocates for Academic Freedom.

During the 1950s, educational expert Benjamin S. Bloom claimed that educators are responsible for influencing the ways in which individuals should act, think or feel. Bloom’s Handbooks explain that the purpose of education is to control much of the individual’s behavior and to integrate “beliefs, ideas, and attitudes into a total philosophy or world view.” Academics became secondary.

In the 1960s, B.F. Skinner incorporated operant conditioning methods with Bloom’s taxonomy and tried to involve these philosophies in all education. When the program (behavior modification) was rejected by teachers and parents, progressives simply changed the name to Behavioral Objectives and increased an emphasis on altering the social and political values of American students.

International Baccalaureate and Common Core State Standards share the mission to create a world community. A Continuum of International Education written by the International Baccalaureate Organization describes their educational goals. Like Bloom and Skinner, CCSS and IB focus on changing the social and political views of students altering the intended purpose of educating children.

According to experts in English and math, the skills as presented in the Common Core curricula are “soft.” Requirements for a math program for students in third grade are now delayed until fourth grade. Another lowering of academic standards! Experts want more time to focus on encouraging American students to exchange their Constitution and national sovereignty for a submissive role in a world community.

To create a more compassionate population, the IBO document explains that world citizenship needs to begin early through development of an understanding of the nature and value of one’s own culture. The result has been a NEW understanding of American culture through a rewriting of history — one that belittles or denies those values that encourage Americans to achieve their dreams. Bloom’s goal of developing a “world view” is being aggressively implemented through CCSS and IB to prepare students for social and political change determined by federal goals.

Those who see school choice as an escape from these ideologies are often misled.Bob Jones University Press, a main resource for educational materials used in Christian and home school settings, prepares text books and tests that incorporate CCSS.

Parents from across the United States send Advocates for Academic Freedomexamples of lessons imposed upon their children that undermine American values and traditions. American Pageant by Kennedy and Cohen is used in a Catholic school. The text does identify America as a republic, but it provides a definition for republic and republicanism that actually describes collectivism.

Public school teachers express concern that their texts do not mention that America is a republic with God-given freedoms. Parents and teachers complain that the Constitution, the Federalist Papers and other founding documents have been omitted because they are “too religious.” Have Americans surrendered their republic without shedding a drop of blood?

Citizens must commit time and energy to demand that federal dollars spent on education be reallocated to the state and that local control of schools be reinstated. States must reclaim their right to shape a curriculum that meets the academic needs of their students.

Advocates for Academic Freedom, an education consulting firm, has begun a grassroots effort to stop the federalization of education. Log onto the AAF home page, click on the PETITION FOR PROGRESS button, electronically sign the petition and become part of the grassroots movement that will eliminate the federal Department of Education and CCSS.
